About Me – Seán O’Connor

I am the founder of the Drive Aware Programme (DAP), a road safety initiative dedicated to reducing traffic offences and promoting safer driving behaviours across Ireland. My career spans law enforcement, the criminal justice system, and extensive work in addiction, mental health, and social inclusion—all of which have informed my approach to road safety and offender rehabilitation.

Originally from the UK, I served as a Magistrate in Manchester, where I presided over civil, family, and criminal cases. As a Justice of the Peace, I handled nearly 97 percent of criminal cases, carefully considering evidence, delivering verdicts, and determining appropriate sentencing. My work gave me deep insight into the judicial process and the societal impact of offending behaviour.

After relocating to Ireland, I gained further hands-on experience as a Garda Reserve member in County Roscommon. This role provided direct exposure to the consequences of traffic offences and helped shape my understanding of the factors that contribute to dangerous driving behaviours.

In addition to my legal experience, I have worked extensively in the fields of addiction, alcohol and drug misuse, and mental health. This work has given me valuable perspectives on how underlying behavioural and emotional issues often play a role in driving offences. It has also been a key influence in the development of the Drive Aware Programme, which aims to help individuals recognise and address the factors that lead to impaired and reckless driving.

I am deeply committed to improving road safety and reducing reoffending rates. Through education and awareness, the Drive Aware Programme empowers drivers to make informed, safer choices behind the wheel, contributing to a safer road environment for all.
